Protecting and restoring ecosystems: Globe, WWF encourage in-depth environmental learning for Filipinos via Camp Kalikasan

For an archipelagic country like the Philippines, many of our industries and livelihood are dependent on marine resources. In celebration of the Philippine Environment Month, World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) and Globe are encouraging Filipinos of all ages to be more proactive in learning about how we can help protect and restore ecosystems by signing up for Camp Kalikasan.

Globe and WWF recently hosted a webinar titled “Climate Change in the Classroom: Understanding the Urgency of Climate Education” with guest speakers from the Department of Education (DepEd), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), as well as youth environmental advocate Xia Vigor, and WWF-Philippines ambassador Karen Ibasco.

“One of the many things that we want Filipinos to take away from Camp Kalikasan is that our actions can greatly impact the environment – from our daily habits, to the waste we produce, and the carbon emissions we emit. Camp Kalikasan reminds us that we are part of nature. Whatever we do to the environment always has a way back to us,” said Apple Evangelista, Globe's Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility.

Camp Kalikasan is an interactive online resource platform designed for students, teachers, and everyday citizens for a more in-depth take on environmental education. The platform and program is a collaboration between Globe and WWF-Philippines which aims to strengthen environmental stewardship among Filipinos in response to the growing risks of climate change.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Globe aims to empower communities through climate education to drive positive environmental impact. The company partnered with WWF-Philippines to encourage Filipinos to participate in the movement to care for the environment.

"Alongside our partners at Globe, we are very excited to bring Camp Kalikasan to more Filipino users as a one-stop digital resource for all things about the environment. Not only do we see it as a way for them to deepen their appreciation for the ocean, but also for them to develop a better understanding of how they play a part in enabling more sustainable living for Filipinos," said Dino Calderon, Environmental Education Program Manager of WWF-Philippines.

While there are already plenty of online resources on the environment and the ocean, Camp Kalikasan is unique because it offers a more immersive experience, including animated videos, games, quizzes, tutorials, and other exciting activities that make learning more enjoyable for everyone.

Registered members can access the book entitled “Daloy ng Pag-asa,” which highlights the implications of people’s actions to the environment and society.

Camp Kalikasan also offers different modules that can match one’s level of interest and expertise. The module on biodiversity provides lessons about mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs— all of which play a crucial role in maintaining the ocean's health.

Aside from biodiversity conservation, Camp Kalikasan teaches energy conservation and climate change. Upcoming modules include lessons that focus on sustainable lifestyle (i.e. waste management and water management), sustainable production, and sustainable consumption. It makes environmental education in the country more accessible to everyone while strengthening WWF-Philippines’ and Globe’s support for Republic Act 9512 or the Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008.

The program is also part of Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 13, which underscores climate action’s importance in saving lives and livelihood to address climate emergencies, and UN SDG No. 14, which emphasizes Life Below Water.

To learn more about the ocean and help preserve it, join Camp Kalikasan today! Visit its website at https://www.campkalikasan.com/ to learn more about the different modules it offers.

Globe Network is Most Consistent in PH: How your most consistent mobile network lives up to its name

There may just be a few things we consider consistent in life. It could be that reliable friend who is always there no matter what happens. Or our suki lunch place that never fails to serve scrumptious meals every day. Or perhaps it’s our neighborhood taho seller who passes by every morning at 8 a.m. with no fail.

Now, you can add Globe to this list of life’s consistencies, as it lives up to its recognition as the Philippines’ Most Consistent Mobile Network in more ways than one.

Consistent Service

Globe’s nationwide service is something that customers can count on day in and day out, with its network coverage spanning the entire archipelago, even far-flung areas. Globe currently serves more than 92 million customers including mobile, broadband and landline users.

In the first quarter of the year, Globe reached at least 250,000 more customers in areas where coverage and connectivity to use data, calls and SMS services were difficult, following the building of new cell site towers.

This figure includes 171,000 new mobile data users and 76,000 new mobile core users (call and text) in 309 cities and towns across the country, from Tabuk in Kalinga and Babatngon in Leyte to Panabo in Davao del Norte and Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay.

In the same three-month period, the Globe experience in 4G/LTE and 5G improved for 687,000 customers in 668 towns. This includes users of Globe’s various brands, from Globe Prepaid and Postpaid to Platinum, and TM users.

Consistent Network Improvement

Globe has also pursued aggressive expansion to deliver a #1stWorldNetwork with relentless builds. In Q1 2022, Globe completed 234 new cell sites, upgraded over 3,500 mobile sites to 4G, and installed 380 5G sites.

This followed its construction of 1,407 new sites in 2021 through its P92.8 billion CAPEX. Globe allocated a total P89 billion in CAPEX this year, targeting 1,700 new cell sites to outdo its builds last year.

Globe’s network expansion is in line with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

These builds aim to support growing demand for connectivity, as Filipinos rely heavily on digital technologies even as the country comes out of the worst of the pandemic.

Consistent Innovation

Globe has always been at the forefront of exploring, tapping and introducing the latest technologies to serve its customers better.

Most recently, it scored another world first with the completion of its deployment of a new series of antennas that efficiently enables the acceleration of 4G and the evolution of 5G technology, which aim to boost its network and ensure energy efficiency. This complements Globe’s aggressive and accelerated 5G rollout, with 380 new sites fired up in the first quarter of the year.

Globe is also exploring the use of space-based broadband technology and has expressed interest in looking at possibilities in the metaverse. Globe’s wholly-owned corporate venture builder 917Ventures, on the other hand, is looking at how Web3 can be harnessed for new startups.

Consistent Digital Enablement

Globe has also expanded into a digital solutions group, offering various services to empower Filipinos whether at work, in school or in leisure.

Globe’s fintech arm, double unicorn GCash, has grown into a platform with a 60-million strong user base. In March this year, the top mobile wallet also hit P500 billion in total gross transaction value, reflecting tremendous business growth.

KonsultaMD, Globe’s telehealth portfolio company that provides quick access to licensed doctors via mobile app, has meanwhile logged over 1 million users in over 50,000 retail outlets across the country, with partnerships with over 70 brands as of Q1 2022. Meanwhile, healthtech firm HealthNow has already served over 900,000 customers via more than 1,000 healthcare providers as of the same period.

Consistent Care for Filipinos

As a critical service provider, Globe has always been there for Filipinos to support their welfare and help them get through the toughest times.

Globe raised a total of P36.7 million worth of donations for 16,000 families in the wake of Typhoon Odette, which devastated parts of the Philippines in December 2021. With partners Ayala Foundation, GMA Kapuso Foundation, and Rise Against Hunger Philippines, Globe also provided relief and support for 11,777 more families in affected areas.

In March this year, Globe completed network restoration efforts in Odette-hit areas in Visayas and Mindanao, where a total of 80 cell sites were toppled.

Globe also extended free roaming calls, texts and data connection to Filipinos in Ukraine in February, at the start of the conflict there. Here at home, Globe also consistently provides free call, charging and WiFi connection in areas stricken by disaster, including parts of Batangas affected by Taal Volcano activity.

Consistently caring for Filipinos, Globe also implements various programs that promote their safety, well-being and upliftment.

Recently, Globe launched the Hapag Movement, an initiative that aims to raise funds to feed 500,000 Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger.

It has also been vigorously promoting Internet safety, especially among children, through the #MakeITSafe campaign and the Digital Thumbprint program, which seek to protect Internet users from dangers that lurk online. Globe also actively blocks spam and scam messages in its network to protect customers from fraud.

Consistency Scores

In the first quarter of the year, global analytics firm Ookla® and independent global standard Opensignal* cited Globe for mobile network consistency.

Based on Ookla® Speedtest Intelligence® data, Globe logged a nationwide Consistency Score™ of 79.45 from January to March 2022, a rise from 70.43 in the same period last year. This was also an improvement from 79.02 registered in Q4 2021.

Ookla’s mobile consistency score is determined by the number of user tests taken that are above a certain speed threshold. The higher the figures, the more likely for customers to enjoy acceptable Internet performance and quality.

Meanwhile, Opensignal recognized Globe for having the Most Consistent Mobile Quality in the Philippines, edging out peers in the Excellent and Core Consistent Quality categories of the Opensignal Mobile Experience Awards*.

The independent global standard recognized Globe with the Excellent Consistent Quality award in its April 2022 Mobile Network Experience Report for the Philippines*, which used data from January 1 to March 31, 2022. Globe’s rating of 51.6 percent was 7.8 percentage points above the nearest competitor.

Globe was also No. 1 in Core Consistent Quality with 74.6 percent, outclassing the nearest contender by 12.8 percentage points.

Opensignal’s Excellent Consistent Quality measures the “percentage of users’ tests that met the minimum recommended performance thresholds to watch HD video, complete group video conference calls, and play games.”

Core Consistent Quality, meanwhile, is “the percentage of users’ tests that met the minimum recommended performance thresholds for lower performance applications including SD video, voice calls and web browsing.”

“We want our customers to feel that Globe is there for them wherever they may be. Whether it’s for connectivity, or to address pain points through fintech, health tech or other digital solutions, Globe is ready to serve them with our #AlagangGlobe brand of care and compassion.  This is what being consistent is all about,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu.

Northern Mindanao focus of Globe, Optus, Singtel 2018 volunteering drive

Better Together volunteers visit Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon to hold education and environment protection initiatives

Over 8,000 students and 250 teachers from two public schools in Northern Mindanao were aided with workshops on digital citizenship and cyber safety, sports clinics, storytelling sessions, school repairs, and a feeding program through the Better Together 2018 Overseas Volunteering Program.

Around 36 employees from Globe Telecom, Singtel, Optus, 24/7, and Convergys went to Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon to participate in the citizenship drive in areas including education, sports, as well as environment awareness and protection. The program was held from July 16-20, 2018.

“We  believe that engaging employees  through volunteerism helps them live out their purpose and the experience enriches them on a professional and personal level,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications at Globe.

Indahag Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro and City Central Elementary School, both of which are Global Filipino Schools were chosen for this year's OVP.  The volunteers conducted a sports workshop, feeding program, storytelling, as well as Brigada Eskwela and Farm to Fork initiatives at the two public schools.

The Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) was also conducted for more than 500 elementary students who were given lessons in cyber safety and digital responsibility. The volunteers taught two of four modules, namely: Digital Insight, which features activities to help students discern proper online behavior to secure their information better; as well as Digital Impact, which tackles issues on technology’s impact on students’ social activities.

Employees from Globe Telecom, Singtel, Optus, 24/7, and Convergys hold a tree-planting activity in Hineleban, Bukidnon

In partnership with Hineleban Foundation, the volunteers of Better Together 2018 OVP also planted over 100 trees in Bukidnon to promote environmental conservation.

Hineleban Foundation is engaged in the preservation and restoration of rainforests and critical watersheds. It is also involved in developing livelihood opportunities for the indigenous people (IP) in Bukidnon and Lanao Del Sur in Mindanao.

‘Eye opener’

Huang Kun, a network cloud engineer at Singtel, said the overseas volunteering program served as an eye-opener for him.

“Everyone deserves access to good education. What we have done is nowhere near adequate for them. More nourishment, be it material or non-material, will be beneficial to these kids who will become leaders in the next two decades. I sincerely hope that I can give back more in the future, and wish this program can continue to expand, and create greater impact by making the world a better place,” Huang said.

For Walid Sukkarieh, associate director at Optus, seeing the unfortunate circumstances that some communities in Northern Mindanao face inspired him to do more volunteering activities in his hometown.

“Nobody will ever forget the smiles on those little kids’ faces at both Indahag and City Central schools, nor those on our own faces for having experienced the opportunity to be surrounded by such joyful people who continue smiling despite the challenges they face. The unfortunate circumstances and challenges that these communities face are quite common and replicated in our own backyards and beyond. Let's get back home and drive the continued expansion of volunteering and awareness for those less privileged than ourselves,” he added.

The Better Together program is now on its seventh year.  The program was created to foster engagement opportunities for employees of Singtel and its affiliates. Back in 2011, Singtel launched its first OVP in the Philippines with Gawad Kalinga where volunteers helped build villages and communities.

In 2017, the OVP was done through a four-day outreach program at the Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (Centex) in Bauan, Batangas, and Taal Lake Conservation Center. The volunteers conducted a DTP workshop, sports clinic, school repairs, under Brigada Eskwela, storytelling sessions, as well as a clean-up drive. Other OVP efforts in 2017 were done in Thailand, Australia, and India.
