Protecting and restoring ecosystems: Globe, WWF encourage in-depth environmental learning for Filipinos via Camp Kalikasan

For an archipelagic country like the Philippines, many of our industries and livelihood are dependent on marine resources. In celebration of the Philippine Environment Month, World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) and Globe are encouraging Filipinos of all ages to be more proactive in learning about how we can help protect and restore ecosystems by signing up for Camp Kalikasan.

Globe and WWF recently hosted a webinar titled “Climate Change in the Classroom: Understanding the Urgency of Climate Education” with guest speakers from the Department of Education (DepEd), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), as well as youth environmental advocate Xia Vigor, and WWF-Philippines ambassador Karen Ibasco.

“One of the many things that we want Filipinos to take away from Camp Kalikasan is that our actions can greatly impact the environment – from our daily habits, to the waste we produce, and the carbon emissions we emit. Camp Kalikasan reminds us that we are part of nature. Whatever we do to the environment always has a way back to us,” said Apple Evangelista, Globe's Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility.

Camp Kalikasan is an interactive online resource platform designed for students, teachers, and everyday citizens for a more in-depth take on environmental education. The platform and program is a collaboration between Globe and WWF-Philippines which aims to strengthen environmental stewardship among Filipinos in response to the growing risks of climate change.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Globe aims to empower communities through climate education to drive positive environmental impact. The company partnered with WWF-Philippines to encourage Filipinos to participate in the movement to care for the environment.

"Alongside our partners at Globe, we are very excited to bring Camp Kalikasan to more Filipino users as a one-stop digital resource for all things about the environment. Not only do we see it as a way for them to deepen their appreciation for the ocean, but also for them to develop a better understanding of how they play a part in enabling more sustainable living for Filipinos," said Dino Calderon, Environmental Education Program Manager of WWF-Philippines.

While there are already plenty of online resources on the environment and the ocean, Camp Kalikasan is unique because it offers a more immersive experience, including animated videos, games, quizzes, tutorials, and other exciting activities that make learning more enjoyable for everyone.

Registered members can access the book entitled “Daloy ng Pag-asa,” which highlights the implications of people’s actions to the environment and society.

Camp Kalikasan also offers different modules that can match one’s level of interest and expertise. The module on biodiversity provides lessons about mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs— all of which play a crucial role in maintaining the ocean's health.

Aside from biodiversity conservation, Camp Kalikasan teaches energy conservation and climate change. Upcoming modules include lessons that focus on sustainable lifestyle (i.e. waste management and water management), sustainable production, and sustainable consumption. It makes environmental education in the country more accessible to everyone while strengthening WWF-Philippines’ and Globe’s support for Republic Act 9512 or the Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008.

The program is also part of Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 13, which underscores climate action’s importance in saving lives and livelihood to address climate emergencies, and UN SDG No. 14, which emphasizes Life Below Water.

To learn more about the ocean and help preserve it, join Camp Kalikasan today! Visit its website at https://www.campkalikasan.com/ to learn more about the different modules it offers.

Find out 8 interesting facts about foodpanda on its 8th birthday in the Philippines

Thanks to online food and groceries delivery services, getting your food is so much easier now. With platforms like foodpanda, you can order instantly and enjoy a delicious meal within minutes.

And nothing beats the excitement of getting a call from a Kuya or Ate Ka-Panda rider/biker/walker to tell you that your order has arrived.

As the leading quick commerce digital platform, foodpanda lets you order from your favorite restaurants and shops offering a wide variety of choices – meals, snacks, groceries, and other daily essentials. With 8 years of delivering food and more in the Philippines, life would never be the same without our favorite pink panda brand that has captured the hearts (and tummies!) of many Filipinos. But aside from satisfying your cravings, your curiosity will also be captured by these mind-blowing facts about the country’s go-to online food and groceries delivery app.

As foodpanda turns 8 this year, we’re treating you to some interesting trivia that you probably don’t know about them yet.

1. From orange to pink

If anything, foodpanda is best associated with their logo – the pink panda. But you’d be surprised to know that it was originally orange before they made the switch to pink, back in 2017. The fuschia-pink look is definitely a lot of fun, and clearly shows that foodpanda is ever-growing, expanding, and not afraid to take that big leap to cater to all of your food needs.

2. Leadership at a crucial time
Transitions are hard enough to begin with, but to do it at the most crucial of times would require exceptional skills – one that Daniel Marogy, managing director of foodpanda Philippines, proved to have when he joined the team a day before the lockdown. “That was a very challenging time for me, but it was made bearable because of the competitive foodpanda team led by very compassionate leaders and dedicated team members who helped me steer the ship in the right direction,” shares Dan.

3. Revolutionizing the food delivery space

foodpanda was the first online delivery service in the Philippines to house all of your favorite restaurants in an app and deliver food right at your doorstep with just a few taps on your mobile phone. Before foodpanda, do you remember how you would collect delivery hotline numbers, so you know who to call when ordering food? Or how frustrating it is that some of your faves are not available for delivery? Now, Ka-Panda riders not only deliver the meals you’re craving, but so much more – you can shop for groceries from pandamart, pick-up your ordered food if you’re in the area, or enjoy exclusive discounts for dine-in offers from their restaurant partners.

4. Putting the digital in digital delivery

It’s called quick commerce for a reason because in as fast as 30 minutes or even less, your order is already at your door. The reason behind this fast delivery service, aside from having a massive fleet of riders, bikers, scooter-riders and even walkers, is that foodpanda pioneered the use of internet connection to their vendors. Prior to that, other online food delivery services had to manually use fax and call center agents to relay the orders to the restaurants, so imagine how long it would take. As the first one to automate the ordering process, they definitely transformed the way online food deliveries work so your food will be delivered still hot and fresh – just the way you like it.

5. Shining the spotlight on “dark” kitchens…
The term ‘dark kitchen’ might sound a bit scary, but a delivery-only restaurant is all there really is to it. It means these food brands do not have physical stores; just take-out outlets designed to deliver only. For foodies who are tired of eating from the same restaurants, you might want to try foodpanda’s concept brands for your next meal. They are present in key cities in Metro Manila and the North Luzon area. (Extra fun fact: some of these brands are created by foodpanda so you can only get it exclusively from their platform).

6. You can never go wrong with pizza and burger!

Any time is pizza and burger o’clock. It’s probably why these two fast-food staples hold a special place in foopanda’s 8-year journey in the country. The very first order to be placed in the app is none other than everyone’s OG snack, pizza, while topping the order list in the app are burgers. As the leader in the online food delivery marketplace, foodpanda continues to offer food items that will meet the fast-paced lifestyle and current needs of their consumers.

7. Employee #1 is still with them

Kristine Luneta, who is part of the Commercial team, currently holds the title of foodpanda’s longest-tenured employee. Like the company, she is also celebrating her 8th year anniversary with them as their employee #1. When asked what made her stay for that long, Kristine shared, “I am drawn to how progressive the mindset is and how connected the people are.”

8. FP = For the People

Making a difference in the community is also part of the company’s advocacies. One of the many initiatives they do to nurture and help the communities they serve is the ‘BuyAnihan Palengke’ program, aimed at assisting enterprising Filipinos become resellers of fresh produce sourced directly from local farmers. To date, more than 10,000 kilograms of fresh produce have been sold to consumers at an affordable price through various partnerships with local government units since the program was launched last year. Watch out for their next food bazaar exhibit to get your stash of fresh fruits and vegetables.

For 8 years, foodpanda has been a prominent presence in the digital food space in the Philippines - and they vow to continue deliver food, groceries, and more for many years to come.

Celebrate with foodpanda’s Pau-tastic birthday: be on the lookout for surprises and announcements for special treats made just for you!

E
ven though we’re always kept busy by work or school, one might worry that you could get bored and unproductive during the weekends or your free time. You might even feel that you want to stay as busy as possible.

There’s nothing wrong with that, as it’s always a good idea to keep yourself engaged—you never know when your productivity might come in handy. You might even discover something that you could turn into a new hobby or business! One way to stay engaged is to get into craft projects during your free time, which is great in keeping your mind and hands active—you can do it for yourself, or you can do it to start on a new path for a business or get new skills for a job.

Here are five ideas for crafts to do:

1. DIY projects

Are you a fan of little inventions and innovations? You might like to try doing DIY projects at home, which is a wide category of small carpentry, repairing, and even engineering projects that aren’t too difficult. There’s a DIY project for every interest and need, and basic skills that you pick up here may go a long way in other places.

2. Programming

3. Leatherworking

Want a skill that you could turn into a business? Leather goods are always in style, so it’s not a bad idea to try your hand at leatherworking. You’ll need quite a few tools and materials to get started, but it’s not too difficult to find—once you get going, you’ll likely create some beautiful things that many people may want.

4. Scentmaking

One craft that isn’t very difficult to do is the art of making scents, whether it’s for perfume or for household use. All you need are the oils that make up the scents and bottles to mix them in, and you have your own homemade fragrances. What’s even better is this can also be a home business, as who doesn’t like to smell good?

5. Sewing

Globe Network is Most Consistent in PH: How your most consistent mobile network lives up to its name

There may just be a few things we consider consistent in life. It could be that reliable friend who is always there no matter what happens. Or our suki lunch place that never fails to serve scrumptious meals every day. Or perhaps it’s our neighborhood taho seller who passes by every morning at 8 a.m. with no fail.

Now, you can add Globe to this list of life’s consistencies, as it lives up to its recognition as the Philippines’ Most Consistent Mobile Network in more ways than one.

Consistent Service

Globe’s nationwide service is something that customers can count on day in and day out, with its network coverage spanning the entire archipelago, even far-flung areas. Globe currently serves more than 92 million customers including mobile, broadband and landline users.

In the first quarter of the year, Globe reached at least 250,000 more customers in areas where coverage and connectivity to use data, calls and SMS services were difficult, following the building of new cell site towers.

This figure includes 171,000 new mobile data users and 76,000 new mobile core users (call and text) in 309 cities and towns across the country, from Tabuk in Kalinga and Babatngon in Leyte to Panabo in Davao del Norte and Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay.

In the same three-month period, the Globe experience in 4G/LTE and 5G improved for 687,000 customers in 668 towns. This includes users of Globe’s various brands, from Globe Prepaid and Postpaid to Platinum, and TM users.

Consistent Network Improvement

Globe has also pursued aggressive expansion to deliver a #1stWorldNetwork with relentless builds. In Q1 2022, Globe completed 234 new cell sites, upgraded over 3,500 mobile sites to 4G, and installed 380 5G sites.

This followed its construction of 1,407 new sites in 2021 through its P92.8 billion CAPEX. Globe allocated a total P89 billion in CAPEX this year, targeting 1,700 new cell sites to outdo its builds last year.

Globe’s network expansion is in line with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

These builds aim to support growing demand for connectivity, as Filipinos rely heavily on digital technologies even as the country comes out of the worst of the pandemic.

Consistent Innovation

Globe has always been at the forefront of exploring, tapping and introducing the latest technologies to serve its customers better.

Most recently, it scored another world first with the completion of its deployment of a new series of antennas that efficiently enables the acceleration of 4G and the evolution of 5G technology, which aim to boost its network and ensure energy efficiency. This complements Globe’s aggressive and accelerated 5G rollout, with 380 new sites fired up in the first quarter of the year.

Globe is also exploring the use of space-based broadband technology and has expressed interest in looking at possibilities in the metaverse. Globe’s wholly-owned corporate venture builder 917Ventures, on the other hand, is looking at how Web3 can be harnessed for new startups.

Consistent Digital Enablement

Globe has also expanded into a digital solutions group, offering various services to empower Filipinos whether at work, in school or in leisure.

Globe’s fintech arm, double unicorn GCash, has grown into a platform with a 60-million strong user base. In March this year, the top mobile wallet also hit P500 billion in total gross transaction value, reflecting tremendous business growth.

KonsultaMD, Globe’s telehealth portfolio company that provides quick access to licensed doctors via mobile app, has meanwhile logged over 1 million users in over 50,000 retail outlets across the country, with partnerships with over 70 brands as of Q1 2022. Meanwhile, healthtech firm HealthNow has already served over 900,000 customers via more than 1,000 healthcare providers as of the same period.

Consistent Care for Filipinos

As a critical service provider, Globe has always been there for Filipinos to support their welfare and help them get through the toughest times.

Globe raised a total of P36.7 million worth of donations for 16,000 families in the wake of Typhoon Odette, which devastated parts of the Philippines in December 2021. With partners Ayala Foundation, GMA Kapuso Foundation, and Rise Against Hunger Philippines, Globe also provided relief and support for 11,777 more families in affected areas.

In March this year, Globe completed network restoration efforts in Odette-hit areas in Visayas and Mindanao, where a total of 80 cell sites were toppled.

Globe also extended free roaming calls, texts and data connection to Filipinos in Ukraine in February, at the start of the conflict there. Here at home, Globe also consistently provides free call, charging and WiFi connection in areas stricken by disaster, including parts of Batangas affected by Taal Volcano activity.

Consistently caring for Filipinos, Globe also implements various programs that promote their safety, well-being and upliftment.

Recently, Globe launched the Hapag Movement, an initiative that aims to raise funds to feed 500,000 Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger.

It has also been vigorously promoting Internet safety, especially among children, through the #MakeITSafe campaign and the Digital Thumbprint program, which seek to protect Internet users from dangers that lurk online. Globe also actively blocks spam and scam messages in its network to protect customers from fraud.

Consistency Scores

In the first quarter of the year, global analytics firm Ookla® and independent global standard Opensignal* cited Globe for mobile network consistency.

Based on Ookla® Speedtest Intelligence® data, Globe logged a nationwide Consistency Score™ of 79.45 from January to March 2022, a rise from 70.43 in the same period last year. This was also an improvement from 79.02 registered in Q4 2021.

Ookla’s mobile consistency score is determined by the number of user tests taken that are above a certain speed threshold. The higher the figures, the more likely for customers to enjoy acceptable Internet performance and quality.

Meanwhile, Opensignal recognized Globe for having the Most Consistent Mobile Quality in the Philippines, edging out peers in the Excellent and Core Consistent Quality categories of the Opensignal Mobile Experience Awards*.

The independent global standard recognized Globe with the Excellent Consistent Quality award in its April 2022 Mobile Network Experience Report for the Philippines*, which used data from January 1 to March 31, 2022. Globe’s rating of 51.6 percent was 7.8 percentage points above the nearest competitor.

Globe was also No. 1 in Core Consistent Quality with 74.6 percent, outclassing the nearest contender by 12.8 percentage points.

Opensignal’s Excellent Consistent Quality measures the “percentage of users’ tests that met the minimum recommended performance thresholds to watch HD video, complete group video conference calls, and play games.”

Core Consistent Quality, meanwhile, is “the percentage of users’ tests that met the minimum recommended performance thresholds for lower performance applications including SD video, voice calls and web browsing.”

“We want our customers to feel that Globe is there for them wherever they may be. Whether it’s for connectivity, or to address pain points through fintech, health tech or other digital solutions, Globe is ready to serve them with our #AlagangGlobe brand of care and compassion.  This is what being consistent is all about,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu.

4 ways to turn passions into something valuable and powerful

Reports have called millennials the “
burnout generation.” This is further expanded by the 2020 Deloitte Global Millennial Survey, which found that 57% of Filipino millennials feel anxious or stressed all or most of the time. The 2022 report found that 45% of millennials around the world feel “burned out due to the intensity/demands of their working environments.”

There are so many stressors these days. Work, finances, and the welfare of their family are just some of the things that induce anxiety. Their only solace is their passion, which ranges from creating and consuming content to playing mobile games.

With all the stressors hounding millennials every day, it’s important to turn passions into something valuable and powerful. Here are four ways to do that:

Make time for it.
Face it, there’s always something that needs to be done. It’s important to set boundaries between work and leisure because a mind must be well-rested in order to function well in the office. It’s not enough to simply find time for one’s passion. These days, it’s about making it. Set a rule that after 6 PM, work notifications must be switched off. The hours after that must be dedicated to rest, spending time with loved ones, and hobbies.

Connect with like-minded people.
A group of friends who share the same passion will most likely encourage it. Friends who enjoy the same bands can go to gigs together, while gamers can join tournaments or just play together. Film buffs can have movie nights where they can discuss their favorite scenes. There are communities that cater to every passion, from Facebook groups to apps like Goodreads for books, Letterboxd for movies, and Reddit for anything under the sun.

Share it with the world.
Social media has made the world smaller, allowing everyone to reach bigger audiences. Creators can share their work on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which can build a following. While the point of pursuing one’s passion is a break from the monotony of work, this could lead to freelancing gigs or even a change in career.

Have the right device.
The right tool can turn a simple hobby into something more powerful. Samsung’s Galaxy M33 5G and M23 5G are great companions for young professionals who want to take their passions to the next level, especially content creation and mobile games.

Both smartphones are equipped with a multi-camera system to capture memories. The Galaxy M33 5G and M23 5G’s suite of lenses is bannered by the 50MP Main camera, which takes photos and videos in clear detail. The smartphones’ 6.6” displays with Full HD+ technology made the gaming experience richer. Lags are virtually undetectable with the 120Hz refresh rate. There’s space for everything since the smartphones have 128GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 1TB with a microSD card.

Both devices are available at a discounted price on Samsung.com and other online platforms this June.[1] The Galaxy M33 5G is priced at 16,990 SRP, down from its original price of PHP 19,490 SRP in Blue, Brown, and Green. Meanwhile, the Galaxy M23 5G is available for PHP 15,490 SRP, down from its original price of PHP 17,990 SRP in Light Blue, Deep Green, and Orange Copper.

Becoming successful at something you're passionate about takes time, persistence, and drive. Put these pieces together and you'll be well on your way to doing what you love, gaining more control and freedom in your life, and unleashing the genuine power that's within you all along.
